Last Tuesday, I got to attend Asia Fashion Exchange (AFX) launch at Makati Shangri-La Hotel through an invite extended by Hazel. AFX is a project supported by the Singapore government, which was spearheaded by Ms. Sherina Chan, Singapore Tourism Board Area Director for Philippines and Brunei.
AFX 2012, which spanned seven days of high-octane fashion, recorded a significant increase in participation from designers, buyers and guests in its four pillar events – Audi Fashion Festival, a showcase of world-class collections by international and Asian designers participated in international design houses such as Zac Posen, Mugler and Swarovski; Blueprint, a fashion gateway to Asia for international buyers and promising design players that brought together 140 international and Asian brands under one roof; Asia Fashion Summit, a premier business conference that generates thought leadership content and insights on fashion topics for industry professionals attended by over 500 fashion practitioners and professionals from 16 countries; and Audi Star Creation, a regional fashion design competition to spot budding talent well-represented by up and coming talents from Asia.
AFX aims to unite the Asian countries and support what Asians have to offer n the global fashion industry. Since its inception in 2010, this has led into so many discovery of new Asian talents, one of which is Mike Yapching, a Cebu-based designer who made it all the way to the 2011 finals with his collection ‘Spiral in Motion’ through one of the fashion event’s highlights, Audi Star Creation.
This 2013, Audi Star Creation is further cementing itself as an Asia-wide fashion design competition that promotes and develops emerging Asian fashion talent as it enters its fourth year. Last year’s Audi Star Creation saw a record 255 entries from 13 countries across Asia, significantly more than the 144 entries received in 2011. Six entries came from Filipino designers while its neighbouring countries Thailand and Indonesia submitted at least 20 entries each.
Audi Star Creation is open to aspiring Asian designers between 16 and 35 with less than two years of experience in the fashion industry. Each entry will include six original and previously unreleased designs, and these entries will be judged based on their creativity, originality and commercial viability.
With the theme “InspirASIAN” and S$10,000 cash prize as well as a one year-long internship with leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin, Audi Star Creation is expecting greater participation from the Philippines for 2013. Designers are invited to interpret the theme of “InspirASIAN” creatively in their designs, bearing in mind that all submissions should reflect and/or be inspired by elements unique to Asia or Asian culture. Designers who want to vie for one of the 12 spots in the Runway Showdown at next year’s Audi Star Creation in May have from now until 31 January 2013 to get their entries in.
Mr. David Wang, Audi Star Creation judge and Vice President of Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TAFf), one of the most notable personalities in the Asian fashion industry, recognizes the talent of Filipino people and shares that young Asian designers are honing their skill level to be on par with designers in Europe and the United States.
According to Mr. Wang, “Audi Star Creation is looking for designers who have a clear point of view or design DNA, and who can infuse that with global trends, resulting in a commercially viable and globally appealing collection. It goes so much further than many other competitions. You don’t just get a cash prize – you get a chance to break into the industry under the guidance of some of Singapore’s best, and acquire an understanding of the industry that betters your chance of really becoming a fashion star.”
Next year, AFX will be on May 13-19. So if you have a friend who has immense talent in fashion designing, please encourage them to join this competition. The cost would only for him/her to make 6 pieces of clothing falling under the theme inspirAsian. Once he/she gets to be a finalist and gets flown to Singapore to compete, all expenses are paid! And if you’re lucky and gets to be one of the three winners, you get to bring home SGD10,000.00. The grand winner, who gets to be awarded as the Audi Young Designer Award, also brings home an additional SGD10,000.00! More importantly, apart from the monetary prizes, these winners will get the exposure and networking they need in the fashion industry as they will be under the wings of the leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin for a year. How cool is that?
If only Hazel or I were talented in designing clothes, we would’ve joined this. LoL. But anyways, Hazel is still a tad luckier than me for winning SGD100.00 worth GCs from one of the largest department stores in Singapore, Takashimaya, that night.
Going back, if you know anyone who might be interested to join, or if you know any budding designer whom you think has immense an immense fashion designing talent and needs a little push to be a star, please tell him/her about Audi Star Creation. It’s their chance to show the world their talent and maybe create a new battalion of Lady Gaga-wearing clothes. Who knows.
You can get the application form for Audi Star Creation 2013 here. Deadline of applications is on January 31, 2013
